Paul Callaghan operates the European headquarters of his international technology and communications group, Leighton, from Sunderland, the city in which he was born.
Leighton operates throughout the world at the cutting edge of new technology across a broad range of sectors and works with clients including British Airways, Microsoft, Lloyds TSB, Sir Robert McAlpine and Tesco.
Paul founded Domain Names.com in 1997 and helped it grow to become one of Europe’s largest domain name registrars before selling it to VeriSign in 2000. Later that year he was voted Ernst and Young Northern E-Business Entrepreneur of the Year.
In 2001, Leighton was recognised as a Technology Fastest 50 company and in July 2003, Paul was awarded an Honorary Fellowship by the University of Sunderland in recognition of his contribution to the business and academic life of the region.
Paul is passionate about helping North East England grow and prosper through the development of a talented and well-educated population and by nurturing and encouraging entrepreneurs and business.
St Peter’s Campus opened in 1994 and is home to Sunderland University Business School, School of Computing, Engineering and Technology, and the School of Education and Lifelong Learning.
Located on the northern bank of the River Wear, the £37 million development has won numerous design awards and is making a major contribution to the regeneration of Sunderland’s riverside and the work of the university.
The college is named St Peter’s due to the proximity of the campus to St Peter’s Church, which, with its twin monastic site at St Paul’s Church in Jarrow, was the home of the Venerable Bede, one of the most significant figures in early medieval history whose influence has been compared in scale to that of Darwin, after him, the world looked different.
The twin monastic sites are currently candidates for World Heritage Site status.
